In today’s downward spiral of economic gloom and turmoil, people are looking for ways to save a buck or two. How about that pesky $15/month co-pay on your woman’s birth control pills? Seems like a logical place to start saving, right? Condoms are expensive though, and abstinence, well c’mon that’s for priests (altar boy joke withheld – we’re all about good taste here at PoppaBlog). SO what is a couple to do? Kids are expensive and if you’re cutting out the Pill to save a few bucks, you most certainly should not be making any more kids. Oooh, I got it…get your boys shut off! Yes, men are actually getting vasectomies in lieu of paying for other forms of birth control at younger ages. Now, this isn’t a new idea…a vasectomy IS a valid form of birth control…BUT to endure elective SURGERY to save some money every month even if you might not be ready to stop having kids? Seems a bit much to me.

here is the original story:

Now in fairness to the guys interviewed in the video, they were done having kids. I also have a friend who is still in his 20s who recently had a vasectomy as well (after 3 kids) because he was done having them. I can understand that reasoning, but the reporter in the video makes the claim that it is a cheaper form of birth control compared to the pill. Which sure, in the long run I’m sure it is, especially if it’s covered by insurance (the snipping). But the video left me feeling like the reporter was making the correlation between bad economy, expensive pills/condoms and cheaper vasectomies across the board. I mean, would the news media ever twist a story to make it more interesting? Naah.

This article (from the same news source) gives it without the savings spin:

Recession Spurs Vasectomy BoomMen flee to procedure while they still have insurance to cover it

But then even trusted WebMD.com makes the assumption that some men are doing it to save some cash every month:

“Couples are finding ways of trying to save money, so they don’t go out to a fancy dinner or an extravagant show,” Shin says. “And if they’re staying home, what is the most common free activity? And what does it lead to? If sexual activity is on the rise, vasectomy is a sure way of preventing a mistake.”

At the end of the day, it’s the family’s (or guy’s) choice to decommission his jewels. While avoiding mistakes and saving $15 a month might seem a bit extreme for some to go under the knife, for others it might be necessary or no big deal. Personally, I’m keeping mine attached until I am completely sure that I’m done having kids…it would be bad enough having my scrotum opened once, twice, no thanks.
