Most men LOVE tools. I mean, have a (un)healthy obsession with tools. Even if a tool is only needed for one job and will undoubtedly collect dust in the garage for the next 30 years, most men can spend hours at Home Depot deciding if they should buy the slightly bigger, more powerful version.
If my wife is reading this post, she can surely attest to this, I personally think the best part of any project is the planning/tool acquisition phase. I’ll spend more time at Lowe’s or Home Depot carefully picking out my arsenal than I will on some jobs.
Granted, there are a few guys in this world that are not into power tools. Those guys also read instructions, drink wine and have more than 3 pairs of boxers. If your dad is a tool guy, or just likes breaking things around the house, here are a few PoppaBlog approved items for Handy Dad!
Dad has mediocre tools?
Some guys will always buy the best name brand, no matter what the cost. Others, like myself will the find the best deal on something that falls in the middle somewhere. If your dad doesn’t have a great high-end set of cordless tools, it’s time for an upgrade. I’ve used and had great experience with tools made by Milwaukee and Makita
, but for my dollar…DeWalt
offers the best bang for buck.
The set pictured above (click it for more details) will typically run you well over $600, but it’s currently $433ish on Amazon.com
Dad complains about “that damned dealership!”
We’ve all done it. The check engine light comes on, but we keep on driving. Hoping that in a few more miles it will shut off. Normally it does, and we can go on with our lives, changing the oil every 3000 miles and drinking a cold Bud Light in the garage and never thinking twice about it. Forgive me for a second while I violate the “If it ain’t broke don’t mess with it” man law. Perhaps the light is there for a reason? I mean, just saying…yeah a check engine light might come on and then go off, but what if there was damage done while the engine wasn’t being “checked?” Some stores (Pep Boys, Advanced Auto Parts) will read your engine codes for free if you have the dreaded check engine light showing. But c’mon who wants to go out to a store when there are tools, beer and the broken car in your garage at home? Get pops an OBDII code reader (for cars newer than 1996):
No clue? Want to spend less than $100?
Get him a Leatherman. No, not the biker guy from the Village People. The multi-tool. Most guys probably think that they don’t need an all in one knife, screw driver, file, bottle opener, mini saw…etc…but they do, and they will. You ever see your dad or husband opening something with his teeth? Maybe trying to cut a wire with a butter knife? Get him a Leatherman. Actually buy him two, one for his broken down car with the flashing check engine light and one for the house. Just don’t buy the $20 one at Wal-Mart. Get the real deal, there are so many imitation Leatherman tools out there. It’s best to spend the extra few bucks and get the real deal. Also, if mail order isn’t your bag most Target stores and outdoorsy stores like EMS and REI carry them. If mail order IS your thing then click below:

Still don’t know what to get dad? I can’t think of any man that would have an issue with a gift card from Home Depot, Lowe’s or Sears. Yes Sears…I realize most ladies see Sears and think old lady clothing and second rate exercise equipment, but tucked away in every Sears is a GREAT tool section, most of which have a LIFETIME guarantee. Amazon gift cards are nice too for dad’s who are hard to shop for.
