Baby Einstein Refund Information

Uh-oh…Baby Einstein DVDs didn’t turn your kid into a genius. In fact, I bet he’s still eating dirt and picking boogers. I’ll admit, my little one watches these DVDs, and she seems pretty interested in them…but she also watches Dexter and the NFL Network with the same intensity. Of course, Showtime isn’t claiming that Dexter is educational, (hmm, I could probably be arrested for letting my daughter watch it) like the Baby Einstein company (now Disney) did.

Good old Mickey Mouse and his team of lawyers is making it right. Yes, if you have some Baby Einstein DVDs laying around, you are entitled to a $15.99 refund for up to 4 DVDs.

The New York Times said:

They may have been a great electronic baby sitter, but the unusual refunds appear to be a tacit admission that they did not increase infant intellect.

“We see it as an acknowledgment by the leading baby video company that baby videos are not educational, and we hope other baby media companies will follow suit by offering refunds,” said Susan Linn, director of Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, which has been pushing the issue for years.

Baby Einstein, founded in 1997, was one of the earliest players in what became a huge electronic media market for babies and toddlers. Acquired by Disney in 2001, the company expanded to a full line of books, toys, flashcards and apparel, along with DVDs including “Baby Mozart,” “Baby Shakespeare” and “Baby Galileo.”

The videos — simple productions featuring music, puppets, bright colors, and not many words — became a staple of baby life: According to a 2003 study, a third of all American babies from 6 months to 2 years old had at least one “Baby Einstein” video.

Despite their ubiquity, and the fact that many babies are transfixed by the videos, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time at all for children under 2.

Looking for something that isn’t at all educational but for some reason will make a 5 month old kid crack up? I suggest Pororo.

In fact, the only thing this episode will teach your kid is how to be self conscious about her body.

But that’s another post…

Want to teach your kid their ABCs with a little more creativity than what Dora or Spongebob might have to offer? Have a designer or artist in the house? This is probably the book for you then.

I’ve been a fan of Werner Design Werks for a few years now, so I was excited to hear about their recent release of alphabeasties: and other Amazing Types. This beautiful children’s book features animals crafted out of typefaces. How about an alligator set in Volta EF? You got it! There’s even a dachshund made out of “d”s set in Bauhaus. Gary fans rejoice!

In the same vein as Bruno Munari’s Alfabetiere, alphabeasties achieves a perfect balance of fun and well-executed design. Pick up a copy for your your kid, but don’t be suprised if you end it keeping all to yourself.
